Digit (Agility Robotics)

Bipedal humanoid robot developed by Agility Robotics for logistics and package handling.

For the parent company, see Agility Robotics (stub). For the chief executive, see Damion Shelton.

Digit is a bipedal humanoid robot developed by Agility Robotics, an American robotics company headquartered in Salem, Oregon. Digit is one of the earliest full-form humanoid platforms to reach sustained commercial deployment, having been placed in service in warehouse logistics operations from 2023 onward. The platform is distinguished by a reverse-articulated knee configuration and a forward-facing torso arrangement that optimize the platform for lifting and carrying tasks rather than for anthropomorphic aesthetic realism.

Version history

Cassie (2017 predecessor)

Agility Robotics' first commercial bipedal robot was Cassie, unveiled in 2017. Cassie was a legs-only bipedal locomotion platform without arms or torso, targeted at research applications in dynamic bipedal walking. Cassie established the mechanical vocabulary that would inform Digit's design.

Digit (2019)

Digit, unveiled in 2019, extended the Cassie architecture with a torso, two arms, and perception sensors. The initial Digit configuration was primarily oriented toward research and pilot deployment. The reverse-articulated knee configuration from Cassie was retained, providing the platform with distinctive locomotion characteristics.

Digit V3 and V4 (2022 to 2024)

Successive Digit revisions refined the platform for commercial logistics deployment. Improvements included manipulation refinement (the addition of purpose-built end effectors for package handling), extended battery runtime, and refined vision. The V4 refresh, released in 2024, brought Digit to its current commercial specification. Notable improvements include a redesigned head with expressive elements and a refined perception system.

Specifications

Use case

Digit is positioned narrowly for logistics and package handling operations, primarily in warehouse fulfillment and inventory movement roles. The platform's payload profile (approximately 16 kg per lift), locomotion architecture (bipedal with dynamic balance appropriate to package movement between fulfillment stations), and manipulation end effectors (optimized for package geometry rather than general-purpose object manipulation) all reflect this positioning. The platform is not positioned for general-purpose or home use.

Deployment status

Digit is deployed under a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) commercial model. Customers do not purchase Digit units outright; instead, they subscribe to a service arrangement in which Agility Robotics provides the units, deployment support, maintenance, and software updates in a bundled contract. Notable Digit deployments include operations at Amazon fulfillment centers under a pilot arrangement announced in 2023, as well as pilots with other logistics operators through 2025 and 2026.

The RaaS deployment model is distinctive in the 2026 humanoid market. Most humanoid platforms are sold outright to enterprise customers; Digit is one of the very few platforms to be offered exclusively under a subscription arrangement. The model reflects both Agility's commercial strategy and the specific operational profile of logistics deployment, where continuous operation over years is expected and where the manufacturer's ongoing support is operationally critical.

Cost per unit

Digit is not sold outright and has no published per-unit price. The RaaS subscription cost is negotiated per customer engagement and is not publicly disclosed. Industry estimates for annual RaaS subscription cost per Digit unit place the figure in the range of USD 50,000 to 100,000 per unit per year, though these figures are not confirmed by Agility Robotics.
